- Brownville Elementary School, Brownville
BES's Natural Treasure
This year-long unit is designed to teach students in
grades K-6 the unique beauty and adventure awaiting
them in the forest surrounding their school. Students
will study the characteristics and components of a forest ecosystem.
They will plan and create a nature trail, complete with markers depicting
the various plant species located along the way. The trail will be used for
both learning and recreation.

Introduction to Business
Eleven life skills students will work together with the school's alternative education program to expand
upon an already successful cooking business. They will continue making and
marketing cookies bi-monthly, but they will also do marketing studies to see if it is feasible to add
a monthly boxed lunch sale as well. This program will integrate English Language Arts with math and hands-on life skills. It is designed to
help students with special needs work within a group situation to accomplish various tasks, set deadlines,
and reap the rewards of hard work.

Performing Arts
Students will gain English, reading, math, history, visual and performing art skills by participating in a rock and roll band.
This program is open first to alternative education students and then opened up to all high school students.

Fitness and Nutrition Program
Thirty students in grades K-2 will attend a 12 week fitness aquatic program . Students will also be involved
in increasing physical activity on their own as well as documenting and charting such information individually.
The intent of the program is to promote healthy lifestyle changes to students and families.

LEGO Robotics Program
LEGO Robotics will be offered as a curriculum unit of study in a high school exploratory science class. Students
will build and test robots and then work with early middle school students as mentors. High school/middle school
teams will demonstrate their robots' ability to complete certain tasks.
- Madawaska Middle/High School, Madawaska
GPS (Global Positioning System): Inside and Out
This is an interdisciplinary project where math and science students are introduced to the science and mathematics
behind GPS systems first in the classroom and then outdoors as part of their Physical Education
class's orienteering program. As a capstone experience, they will engage in an exciting geocaching activity enabling
them to use their newly aquired knowledge outdoors.

Take Me Fishing Dad!
This grant supports development of a cross-functional fly fishing unit that includes study of the life cycle of insects
as well as fish. The unit teaches not only fishing but observance of laws, respect for the environment and includes as
a side benefit physical activity as well as mental stimulation.

“Step-Up Day” Video
7th graders will produce a “Step-up Day” video to share with incoming 6th graders and their parents. The film serves
as a creative introduction to our school by highlighting positive attributes of the school, as well as providing needed
information about many different aspects of the school. The video will be run on the public access channel in the high
school and posted on the school web site for easy access.

Engineering Inspirations
This after-school program emphasizes the use of Lego robotics to develop logical reasoning and experimentation with an
actual model to test hypotheses and change conditions to achieve desired results. Five teams of students will research
and create projects involving five different robots.

Little Owl Press Report Studio
Fourth grade students produce “The Little Owl Press”, an elementary school newspaper, which summarizes important events,
activities and programs at Madawaska Elementary School for each trimester. This newspaper will be transformed into
“The Little Owl Press Report”, a student produced newscast that will incorporate digital video, digital photos, music,
and voice recordings.

Pedal Power
This grant funds the purchase of 20 mountain bikes to be used as part of a cross-curriculum program in which 4th and
5th grade students will be exposed to bicycle riding as a life long physical activity. Students will have the opportunity
to take part in a bicycle safety program, presented by a certified bicycle safety instructor and participate in a bicycle maintenance program.

Children’s Stage Adventure
The Children’s Stage Adventures program will come to Madawaska Elementary School for a week long residency, allowing approximately
50-70 fourth and fifth students to participate in a theater production. Students will have a chance to experience the process involved
in a theatre production and expose them to theater workshops put on by trained professionals.

Digital Storybooks For Kids
Grade Five students will author, illustrate, film, edit, and publish their own stories for the purpose of sharing them with younger or
non-reading students school wide and beyond. These virtual stories will be created as video Podcasts, allowing students and teachers to
experience the books via personal computer or iPod.

LEGO Robotics
Additional equipment is being provided for use in this high school's robotics program.
- Milo Elementary School, Milo
Robo Club
This after school club for students in grades 4-6 will meet twice a week, and will require a behavior and participation contract.
Students will learn science and technology skills as well as teamwork, programming and hands-on skills.
- Nickerson Elementary/Greenville Middle School, Greenville
Appalachain Trail Project
This project gets students onto The 100 Mile Wilderness of The Appalachian Trail. Students will engage in hiking,
develop leadership skills, and be immersed in place-based education that makes them aware of the maintenance needs
of the AT. These physical activities are linked to reading books and articles about the AT, writing about hiking
experiences, hiking with a blind Thru-hiker and engaging in service projects along the trail.
- Piscataquis County Middle School, Guilford
Real Guys Read!
Using high interest, engaging, quality “guy” literature, “Real Guys Read” will motivate, formerly reluctant, young
male students to enjoy reading.
- Winslow Junior High School, Winslow
Mission Enke (Year 2)
A matching grant has been provided to allow this year's eighth grade students to experience NASA's Rendezvous with a
Comet mission at the Challenger Space Center in Bangor, Maine.
- Windsor Elementary School, Windsor
Parents as Partners (Year 2)
The project is a partnership between Title 1 staff, students, and parents. The purpose is to expand the already existing Parents as Partners
literacy piece to include a math component. This component will increase math knowledge of both parents and students by instruction, support
and the use of highly engaging multi-sensory learning tools. The tools will be checked out by students and used to reinforce the math skills
they are working on in school in a supportive and engaging way at home.

A Sculptural Exploration in Clay (Year 2)
Last year, students designed, created, glazed and fired sculptural clay projects. This grant funds the purchase of a kiln to enable glazing
and firing to be done entirely within the classroom.
- Windsor Elementary School, Windsor
Outdoor Classroom
An Outdoor Classroom will be created on school grounds that children and staff will have access to throughout the school year. The area around
the Outdoor Classroom will be landscaped by the 7th graders. Students will help to pick out plants, bushes, trees and will be responsible for
helping to plant and maintain the gardens.
